Lab for Regional Earth System Modeling (LRESM)

The WyACT grant includes the creation of a Lab for Regional Earth System Modeling (LRESM) consisting of the following new faculty positions:

  • The Integrated Earth System Modeler (a more senior faculty hire) will oversee the LRESM and will project changes in complex human-environment systems. This position will have its primary faculty home in the Haub School. We expect this position to be announced soon.
  • The Hydroclimate Modeler (Assistant Professor) will track water from atmosphere to surface. This position will be housed primarily in the Dept of Atmospheric Sciences, starting Fall 2023.
  • The Computational Economist (Assistant Professor) will predict economic consequences of decreasing certainty in water availability. This position will be housed primarily in the Dept of Economics, starting Fall 2023.
  • The Forest Ecosystem Modeler (Assistant Professor) will predict forest disturbances and ecosystem changes and effects on streamflow. This position will be filled by Tucker Furniss, new faculty in the Dept of Ecosystem Science and Management.
  • The Social-Watershed Modeler (Assistant Professor) will examine the social repercussions of decreasing certainty in water availability. This position will be housed primarily in the Dept of Agricultural Economics, starting Fall 2024.

The LRESM tentatively will be housed in the Aven Nelson Building on the UW campus. While faculty will have their primary offices in their home departments, the LRESM space will be used for collaborative activities, for graduate students, and postdocs.
